Summary of Position

The Scientist I/II, Protein Purification is a hands-on laboratory position in the protein chemistry group within the Antibody Engineering department. The primary responsibilities of the position are purification and biophysical characterization of proteins, including antigens, antibodies, and antibody-like molecules in support of discovery research. This individual will interact with multiple cross functional teams, and provide high quality proteins to support drug discovery and development of MacroGenics’ pipeline of preclinical and clinical programs.

 

Responsibilities and Job Duties:

  • Purify proteins low in endotoxin from milligram to gram scale and characterize using SEC-MALS, HPLC, and DSC to support research projects for drug discovery. 
  • Perform chemical modification of proteins using a variety of chemistries for biotinylation and Alexa Fluor labeling, Fab generation, proteolytic cleavage of affinity tags, and deglycosylation. 
  • Conduct protein formulation screening and stability testing to make recommendations to research team for molecules target selection. 
  • Present technical data and updates to project teams to help facilitate decision making for molecules target selection. 
  • Collaborate with research and development organizations for technology transfer of lead drug candidates.

Scientist II will also perform the following resposibility and job duty: 

  • Supervise and mentor one direct report to ensure strong orientation to company and position and learn all procedures, processes and protocols to be successful in the role. 

Qualifications

Education & Experience

 

Scientist I:

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, biophysics, or equivalent scientific field of study.
  • Experience working with antibodies.

Scientist II:

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, biophysics, or equivalent scientific field of study.
  • Minimum of two years biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience. 
  • Experience working with antibodies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong expertise in protein biochemistry, monoclonal antibodies, column chromatography, and biophysical techniques for characterizing proteins including HPLC, light scattering, and thermal stability measurements. 
  • Ability to critically interpret results and make subsequent recommendations to project teams.
  • Strong trouble shooting skills.
  • Strong understanding of protein purification processes and ability to scale up protein purification processes.
  • Demonstrates the desire to seek out new ideas and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Ability and desire to work well with diverse employees and customers in a cooperative and friendly manner.
  • Must possess the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills for interfacing with upstream and downstream functions, including the Development.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Scientist II will supervisor one direct report.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with protein modeling is preferred. 
  • Prior supervisory experience is preferred.
