Summary of Position

The Senior Director/Vice President, Portfolio & Program Management is responsible for developing and executing the vision and operating model for MacroGenics’ portfolio and program management function. This individual will ensure the seamless execution of development activities related to pipeline programs, which span preclinical through pivotal stages of development, and ensure that performance targets, budgets and timelines are met. Champion the development of standardized processes, systems and tools for portfolio management. Responsible for maintaining an effective alliance management function that closely integrates with business development activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads the development of a detailed cross-portfolio project plan, and interface with cross-functional representatives to identify risk mitigation, resource optimization, and acceleration strategies for individual programs.
  • Manages the internal governance structure and processes including cross functional committees to ensure transparency, effective communication, and adherence to good decision-making principles.
  • Drives effective alliance management for the partnered and co-development programs by closely collaborating with our pharma and biotech collaborators and lead and participate in governance committees with our alliance partners. to ensure transparency, communication, and adherence to good decision making principles.
  • Proactively manages portfolio issues to ensure that risks and mitigation strategies are identified early and communicated effectively to senior management.
  • Champions best practices in Program Management, including the use of templates, tools, and processes to drive efficiency, alignment, and effective planning.  
  • Creates a performance-based culture through accountability, coaching and mentoring of direct reports. Leads, manages and develops team members ensuring that goals and measurements are consistent with the priorities of the business. Holds team accountable for performance aligned with those goals.  

Qualifications

Education

  • A Master’s degree in a scientific field of study

Experience

Senior Director

  • Minimum of twelve (12) years of successful experience in a Program or Portfolio Management role within biotech/pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience in the oncology and/or biologics areas
  • Five (5) years of experience managing a team
  • Prior experience with creating strategy and long-term planning
  • Experience creating and managing integrated timelines and budgets
  • Experience leading late-stage teams in global product development, including regulatory filings, and product launches/life cycle management
  • Experience working with corporate partners and alliance management

Vice President

  • Minimum of 15 years of successful experience in a Program or Portfolio Management role within biotech/pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience in the oncology and/or biologics areas
  • Five (5) years of experience managing a team
  • Prior experience with creating strategy and long-term planning
  • Experience creating and managing integrated timelines and budgets
  • Experience leading late-stage teams in global product development, including regulatory filings, and product launches/life cycle management
  • Experience working with corporate partners and alliance management

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong collaborator and influencer with both internal and external stakeholders, including domestic and international pharmaceutical partners
  • Proven ability to function effectively across a matrix organization with multiple stakeholders and constituents, with the ability to focus a team to prioritize and accomplish its goals
  • Strong leadership and communication skills (including presentation skills) with success in influencing stakeholders at all levels and across different functions
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver on project plans and time lines 
  • Ability to proactively identify conflicts and risks, and implement solutions
  • Thorough understanding of the drug development processes, and familiarity with biologics and oncology programs
  • Demonstrated strong leadership with ability to develop and mentor team of reports
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities under tight deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Project)
  • Excellent budgeting, analytical and forecasting skills.
  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Oversees a team of professional project managers at various levels

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA, Ph.D in a scientific field or other relevant advanced degree
