Summary of Position

The Supervisor, Materials Management is responsible for warehouse operations supporting Manufacturing, Quality and Development. Warehouse operations include physical and administrative tasks involved in the shipping, receiving, storing and distributing of materials, including GMP raw materials, finished products and other supplies/equipment as required. Additionally, this role will be responsible for working with key stakeholders to develop and implement processes to determine projected material usage, order materials as needed, and monitor and maintain inventory levels to meet anticipated manufacturing material usage.

Responsibilities and Job Duties

  • Organize and prioritize staff and workload for inbound receiving, inspection, sampling, inventory management, weigh/dispense/kitting, distribution, drug substance freeze-down/ put away, storage, and outbound shipping operations.
  • Receive, inspect and disposition materials to ensure compliance with all company and regulatory agency policies and procedures. 
  • Ensure accurate inventory control of all controlled materials and responsible for the execution of required physical cycle counts in accordance with SOPs, cGXP, FDA, OSHA and other applicable regulations.
  • Ensure execution of material flow and work practices in accordance with SOPs, cGXP, FDA, OSHA, IATA, DOT, TSA and other applicable regulations. 
  • Drive best practices for warehouse operations and related logistical activities, as well as inventory management, warehouse staff development, and performance metrics.
  • Recommend and implement plans and strategies for continuous improvement in operating methods and procedures to meet both short and long-term needs and to resolve problems prior to or when they arise. 
  • Develop and maintain department procedures for storage of quarantined and released GMP materials and non-GMP materials.
  • Coordinate end-to-end ordering, receiving and distribution of materials to support Manufacturing.
  • Manage supplier/vendor relationships as applicable. Communicate with vendors, purchasing for scheduling receipts.
  • Prepare metric statistics, charts and other reports to summarize materials management performance.
  • Coordinate with Quality to ensure sampling and release of materials for cGMP manufacturing use
  • Work in partnership with Quality, Manufacturing, and Finance to resolve quality and supply chain issues associated with incoming GMP raw materials and process consumables
  • Conduct investigations related to materials management issues and implement corrective and preventative action plans to address deficient areas identified and to ensure adherence to compliance. 
  • Operate warehouse equipment including forklifts and pallet jacks in a safe manner compliant with OSHA standards.
  • Supervise, motivate, and mentor Materials Handler(s) to continuously improve skills and team performance. Be accountable for development and/or performance management through activities such as assignments and associated technical training programs.
  • Additional responsibilities to support supply chain and/or corporate activities may be necessary as designated by management


Education & Experience

  • Bachelors degree and a minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in materials management within the biotech/pharmaceutical industry; or
  • High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in materials management within the biotech/pharmaceutical industry

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of inventory management principles and practices within GMP warehouse environment
  • Excellent documentation skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively communicate to all levels of the organization
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task concurrent project demands
  • Exceptional attention to detail, as well as organizational skills
  • Strong collaborative skills, ability to develop working relationships with a wide range of people
  • Analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to be flexible on schedule to support warehouse and manufacturing operations
  • Ability to regularly perform lifting (minimum 40 pounds)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior warehouse and/or materials logistics supervisory experience
  • Experience with ERP or WMS system implementation or integration
  • Forklift certification
  • IATA Dangerous Goods training and certification
