    Summary of Position

    The Director/Senior Director, Facilities and Engineering is a strategic leader responsible for oversight of all MacroGenics cGMP physical plants and non-GMP sites.  This individual ensures that all of our sites are operated and maintained appropriately and that our cGMP manufacturing facilities are operated and maintained in compliance with all regulations.  He/she will establish both short-term and long-term strategic visions to ensure our real estate needs are met and as a key member of the Biopharmaceutical Development & Manufacturing leadership team, he/she will work closely with research, manufacturing, validation, quality and regulatory functions to support commercial licensure of our new manufacturing plant.   The Director/Senior Director will manage and develop the team who supports these activities.

     

    Responsibilities and Job Duties

    • Provide oversight of all day-to-day operations to ensure our buildings meet end-user requirements.  This covers over 200,000 sq ft of office, lab, and cGMP manufacturing space in both Rockville, MD, and Brisbane, CA.
    • Responsible for managing the calibration and metrology program supporting GMP, GLP, and R&D functions and ensuring that all needs are met by internal stakeholders.
    • Collaborates with senior leadership team to develop and maintain a strategic space plan to manage our real estate planning consistent with our long-range growth plans.
    • Ensures our cGMP manufacturing facilities are properly maintained, calibrated, and documented to be compliant and appropriate for use.  Serves as primary facilities contact for regulatory and partner audits.
    • Ensures compliance with all leasing and permitting requirements and acts as primary business point of contact for landlords, real estate agents and permitting/zoning agencies.   Communicates problems and resolutions with stakeholders as appropriate.
    • Champions and implements business processes for continuous improvements and supports continuous improvement culture & mindset within the Facilities & Engineering team. Actively engages in the identification, sharing and adaptation of best practices cross-functionally. Establishes metrics for building services to monitor performance and to facilitate continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Responsible for the physical security of our buildings. Ensures assessment, development, and maintenance of security policies and practices and emergency response plans, policies, and procedures in accordance with best practices. Liaises with Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) department to ensure facilities have compliant and effective EHS programs.  
    • Responsible for the department’s annual budget and quarterly forecasting processes. Ensures sound management of head count and expenses to meet approved spending plan while achieving all departmental commitments and project objectives.
    • Creates a high-performing team that emphasizes strengths-based execution, accountability, open communication, people development and continuous improvement. Recruits, motivates, retains and develops key employees. Builds and sustains employee engagement by creating an environment where individuals and teams can excel. Establishes departmental and individual goals and objectives in alignment with corporate goals and priorities. Identifies performance improvement targets and metrics.
    • Effectively and transparently manages multiple, at times conflicting priorities, and proactively seeks creative yet viable solutions to resolve such conflicts.

    Qualifications

    Education

    Bachelor's degree in related field

     

    Experience

    Director

    • 10 years of previous facilities and engineering experience, preferably at a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company
    • 5 years of previous supervisory experience within facilities and/or engineering
    • Previous experience overseeing facilities and/or engineering in the pharmaceutical industry
    • Previous experience overseeing facilities and/or engineering in a cGMP bio-manufacturing plant

    Senior Director

    • 15 years of previous facilities and engineering experience, preferably at a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company
    • 5 years of previous supervisory experience within facilities and/or engineering
    • 5 years of experience overseeing facilities and/or engineering in the pharmaceutical industry
    • Previous experience overseeing facilities and/or engineering in a cGMP bio-manufacturing plant

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • In-depth understanding of cGMPs as it pertains to operating a manufacturing facility, including metrology, HVAC, WFI, and other critical utilities.
    • Knowledge of general building operations, leases, and space planning
    • Customer-centric approach to ensuring needs of a diverse set of customers are met
    • Ability to establish and negotiate contracts to support building maintenance
    • Ability to support and effectively multi-task different and complex assignments and responsibilities
    • Ability to manage, train and mentor staff
    • Strong presentation and writing skills to communicate effectively internally and externally
    • Ability to lead cross-functional teams, be collaborative, and represent teams at a variety of forums
